senior editor Sally Armstrong shares her favorite accessory of the season.
As the days get shorter and the air gets cooler, comfortable evenings at home become even much more appealing. I like to set the mood with plenty of flickering candles displayed in equally pretty holders. here are some appealing pieces I’ve come across lately, ideal for your next night in.
Of all the pieces I’ve spotted, this chiseled-looking wooden candelabra is one of my favorites. It has such a beautiful, raw quality to it, and I love its chalky white finish.

These weighty cast-concrete candleholders have been dipped in matte gold paint, giving their chunky forms a bit of sophistication. Plus, they’ve been smartly finished with cork bases to avoid them from scratching up your tabletops.

This tea light holder from Tom Dixon is made from thin metal, and has been etched to look like wood. I think of it would cast really interesting and complex shadows.

This candelabra would make a very dramatic centerpiece, but wouldn’t look heavy in a room thanks to its bleached finish. I think it would be a beautiful addition to an all-white space or breezy country home.

Pictured above are two different candleholders by designers Simon Legald and Pontus NY, and both would appeal to modernists. The Nocto holders (center) are a modern take on a classic chamber candleholder (the kind you carry from room to room), while the the folk candleholder features a small tray — a useful place to drop jewelry or change.

This delicate candleholder is a mix of Murano-blown glass and a spun-brass base, and has a very sculptural look. I like how the tea light is encased in a glass bubble that softly diffuses the light.

For a pretty table setting, I’d randomly scatter these white powder-coated tea light holders down the length of a dining table, tucking them in and amongst small vases of flowers.

The varying shades of green in these votives from Jayson home would add a terrific jolt of color into any room. A mercury-glass base is hidden underneath their hand-painted exterior, so when candles are lit, a pretty silver glimmer shines through.
